Homesteading on the Small Scale

For as long as I could remember, I've always been in love with crafting, cooking, gardening and anything that I could do by hand from start to finish. I'm an avid crocheter, and home cook, and I can't live anywhere I can't garden in some capacity.

2010 was a year of transition for me. I separated from my husband, my home and everything I had known and moved boxes, books, cat and all from Maryland into small town USA; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. From that point on, knowing that there will be tight times ahead as the move took everything I had in savings and a great deal of emotional and physical energy. I had to learn to live very frugally, and learn to do for myself, because this time, there would be NO ONE to help me.

The scrimping and saving has taught me many valuable lessons. One of the most important was having to find myself and follow my passions. I had spent so many years following someone else's dream, and plans that I had no idea what mine where, or even who I was. I did, however, know what I loved to do; cook, garden, knit, crochet and spin. I also had to learn to DOWNSIZE. I went from a house, to a tiny condo, less than 900 square feet, so downsizing my life meant pitching, salvaging, and giving away a great deal of crap that I had accumulated.

With all the randomness gone, I could now fill it up with satisfying and useful skills to save money as well as my sanity.

What could I do with a tiny deck, tiny kitchen and a tiny home? Much more than I ever though possible. Trial and error, and some elbow grease, and a couple years later, I've turned my passion into a lifestyle. I call it homesteading with a modern bohemian flair.

Come and be a part of my journey, and we'll learn together how to be crafty, crazy and full of awesome.
